Already the Frontón de Cienfuegos knows of pelotaris of international stature: Barrenechea, Elorza, Luis Godoy, Mácala, Piston, Cubotica, Esquivel II, the local Rafaelito García ... Decades have passed from so much glory, already passed, but not necessarily lost and the recent Visit to the city of the vice president of the International Federation of Basque ball resumes proposals.
In addition to the Spanish Federation, Julián García Angulo was accompanied in the afternoon of Thursday by his Cuban counterpart Lázaro Mendoza Simón. Its objective was to verify, on the spot, the conditions of the facility and to talk with governmental and sports authorities the option of including it among the stops of the international circuit of the discipline.
"The truth is, it's in very good condition yet," he explained. It needs some investments, the soil needs improvement, the painting theme ... The valuation makes it an expert and within a month we would have a more precise criterion; But it would not be a problem to integrate it into the international circuit of Jai alai or Cesta Punta. We have several locations: Madrid, France, Mexico, Miami, Uruguay and Cuba, we think this could be.
"The only Fronton with possibilities would be this, because unfortunately the one of Havana is very deteriorated. It is an initiative of the International Federation, with the support of his Cuban counterpart, with whom he has very good relations, he insists. It would allow them to practice other modalities on that court. "
Intentions to one side, these negotiation processes are never so simple: "We find ourselves in a complex situation, because the city government intends to put a table to practice other sports like basketball, handball ... They must make a clear analysis, because the floors of Wood or get really well to meet their goals or not; Putting them on a hard floor is not good for much. In the end, the authorities have the final decision. If everything went well, it could have room at the circuit this year, next November.
"It's a possibility for the future," adds the Spaniard García Angulo. Sport tourism is already starting to work worldwide and depending on it can make other assessments on whether it is worth or not to keep its characteristics of Frontón. It would become a center of attention and help in the face of the expansion of the sport or take back what 75 or 100 years ago was already here.
"Rehabilitation would be beneficial not only for the sport: it is a new project, which not only goes through the game or a specific specialty, but for the rescue of history and attract new people and foreign visitors to this activity , In a mythical Fronton like the one of Cienfuegos".
