But C=C, shaped = HEWED, bit = CHEWED (bite and chew are synonyms according to Chambers), so 'working' is superfluous is it not?

If 'bit' is being used as a noun meaning 'bite' then 'bit working' would lead to CHEWING.

The more I think about this, the more confused I get! I am clearly missing something (not for the first time!.
