The pup’s eyes furrowed as he struggled to think about the abstract thought that was so far out of his grasp. In his little heart and in his mind he knew there was something in the world that was trying to tell him something. There was a call that resonated deep within his bones. It pulsed through his body with his blood with every heartbeat. At times it was so resounding it stole his breath away. But he could not figure out why and therefore he continued to lean helplessly against the tree, occasionally reaching out to touch his nose to his sister. How dearly he wished he had the answers, or could find a way to learn from the dreams the earth sent him.
He looked up at her with his burning orange eyes, studying her face and comparing it to his dream. Shaking his head, he was assured the mask he saw looming out at him from the darkness was very different from the one his sister looked at him through now. Adonai, though distant, still held a semblance of expression and warmth. The face that peered at him was both freezing and burning. It’s lips forever twisted in a snarl though its voice cried out in pain. His body shivered at the recollection. He just calls for help. Begs, just says, ‘please.’ Pagan shivered again and seemed to sink lower. There had to be more, something he was missing, or something that was not being given to him. The missing pieces were wrapped up in nightmares he could not explain and of things he had not even experienced yet. Ghosts and spirits, life and death dancing around his subconscious mind. Things in existence he could not give words to. Things he had never seen with his eyes. Save for the trees. Though bare and their fingers long and reaching, the trees were the few things in the dreams he could name, so he clung to that comfort even as they tore at him in the folds of the night.
A floppy ear flicked to his sister and he smiled sadly, disbelievingly. He knew he woke her up, but he let the white lie slip away. There was a stillness after she said his name. The tone rang through him, momentarily quieting the other calls to him. Now his gaze flicked up to train on her and focus on her words and her expressions. There was so much difference between them, but they were still the same. He willed himself to ignore the difference. For all he knew that could have been the key he was missing to the answers he sought. Copper eyes looked towards the sea. He breathed in as if he could smell it from this distance. But what if we could? Maybe we should go to it, see if we can learn?
