In a strict Ximenean world the ideal homophone clue says the WHOLE answer sounds like X. Some outlets are more generous, allowing part of the answer to be treated as homophone, which is fine by me. One thing I've noticed recently is these part-homophones referring to non-words, eg for CROON the setter might split the wordplay CROO / N and use 'gang heard' for CROO/CREW. I'm not too keen on this practice. What goes in the grid – CROO, KROO, KREW? To my mind it's much fairer if the homophone points to a real word.
On the surface Puck's clue breaks all kinds of rules, but things are slightly different on Planet Guardian; and, to be fair, 'fungi' and 'fun guy' points to one of the oldest joke chestnuts in the book. Replies:
