Danny and Sol came pouring out of the thick black smoke, hacking on the dark smoke they'd both managed to inhale in their shock. Soot covered the both of them from top to bottom, hiding even Sol's distinctive coloring in a mess of sooty dark.
"It wasn't supposed to do that, was it?" Danny asked, glowering at the book in his hands; even blinded by smoke he'd managed to pick up both his books and his precious pack.
"I dunno, it was pretty cool though, wasn't it?" Sol replied, eying the dark soot all over him with amusement. There was no way he'd get clean just using his tongue; it was a good thing he didn't mind swimming in the lake!
"Well, I don't know about cool but it certainly..." Danny trailed off, gulping just a little as he saw his twin and older brother grinding to a halt nearby. He cleared his throat, fully aware of the fact he looked like some kind of mad inventor with an experiment gone wrong. Which wasn't super far from the truth, all things considered. He pushed at his hair, which he'd allowed to grow a bit shaggy again in his distraction, but only managed to make it stand up at odd angles and increase the "totally crazy" look.
"Oh... hellooooo," he said cautiously, looking from the cloying black smoke to his brothers and back. "Soooo.... What are you two up to?"
Yeah, acting casual is totally going to make this better, Sol sent telepathically, rolling his eyes at Danny. Danny, left with no other option, ignored him entirely. But, being Danny, he broke down pretty quickly and started scrambling for an explanation.
"I didn't do it! Or I mean, I didn't mean to do it. And really, it shouldn't have happened at all. Maybe the pressure from being so far underwater is affecting it? But... I don't think that's it, since we're not feeling anything. Right? So..." Danny had forgotten he was supposed to be explaining himself, already starting to puzzle out why his concoction - which he'd hoped would be a super potent antiseptic - hadn't worked the way he'd wanted.
