Surely the main departure from convention in this clue is that there is no plain "definition".
The normal wordplay side of the clue (the latter part) is straightforward. In place of a plain "definition" we have another wordplay which depends on a homophone; that's what takes us by surprise and needs bit more thought.
Whether the cardinality is right (ie should that really clue TOADSTOOLS) is a moot point; classifications like that can often behave like mass nouns - eg: Gala are nice apples (not Galas) - maybe borderline in this case.
I don't see any comparison with indirect anagrams - the complaint there being the need for a double jump of reasoning rather than a single one.
You know what to look out for when you see Puck in the byline - this puzzle was otherwise fairly conventional - but still a fun solve. Replies:
