Enocra Woodland

Pine, spruce and firs alike...
Dense coniferous forests cover the woodlands, with clearings, paths and the occasional wildberry shrub throughout. Pine, spruce and fir make up much of the forest in the east, with the forest becoming swampier in the west towards Mecor Valley. In the west, cypress trees dominate, with fallen trees creating bridges across and throughout the stillwaters.

It was the day, the night, and the eve. The veil between the worlds was paper thin and the spirits of both reached from each of the depths to call to those who could hear their voices. Both light and dark raced over the ground of the world of the living, eyes wide with fear. It was all new, strange, and a mystery. Neither knew what was happening or why this was coming to them. They saw the eyes of their father. The burning orange shot straight through them and forced them to their feet. Brother and sister ran from their terrors, blinding by the fear of what was happening. In the sheltering darkness of the trees, they looked at each other, seeing and unseeing each other for the first and last time.

One was the beautiful creamy gold, a lover of life and birth. Her life had become solid and secure, even with the loss of her father. The other had become ragged, crumpled, and broken. Twisted and confused he had been torn from what he was and lost everything he needed to be. He could feel himself tear to shreds within his own body until his very core was nothing but shards.

When he looked up at Solstice, his eyes met hers. He could see the balance, the sun and moon, the dark and light looking down at him. He knew what was real and what was right. The darkness that had surrounded him became clear. Their father called his name, called his son to do his bidding. It was the life and the death that had been fated for them both.

The realization dawned on him. Just like his father before him he sank to the ground, the blood stained dirt. This was the place, with the trees above them. He could feel the pulse of death under his paws. It gave him strength to stand again and look at the face of his sister. The face that was twisted in horror.

“P…..pppp….. Pppp……” Desperately he tried to make the sounds, the noise he had heard so many around him make. Lips pressed together he yearned just this once to break his own silence. “Ppppp…. Ssssssss…” Air whistled from behind his teeth, hissed from the pressure of tongue. A silent whine. He opened his mouth and breathed out heavily. “H-- h-- p…. Ppppp….” He licked his lips, trying so hard to make his need clear. His tongue stayed pointedly out. “...llll….. L…. hhhhh….”

She whined and backed away from him. “No… I won’t…”

His teeth snapped and bared at her. He was not above forcing her own fangs. Lifting from the ground, he approached, his hackles rising. “Hillllllll mmmmmmmm….”

“No…”

Another snap of his jaws.

“Hlllll mmm!!”

“N-”

Before she could make another offending noise, he surged forward. His fangs were drawn to their fullest. He aimed at her face, intent on damage, forcing her to retaliate. There would be one and only one way to defend. Instinct consumed her, blinded her. Her own jaws snapped on chords that could never scream and severed veins that had fueled a life.

Calm. He fell limply to the ground at her feet. Just enough time and energy to curl up around her paws. There was a smile on his face. Content.

She whined again and laid her head on his shoulders. Gently she bathed his brow with her tongue. In silence, Solstice led the god of the underworld to his home and his place. At last her brother had peace.

Just as the sun started to set and Thoth’s breath finally stopped she got to her feet and placed a final kiss on her brother’s brow. She returned to her home as the dangers of night just started to stir, knowing the balance was finally restored.
