Archimedes principle? Thought that had to do with buoyancy of force exerted by a boats displacement in water.
While it's true the flow rate will increase over unblocked area of spillway... it can only do so if the lake level rises. When I spoke of flooding... I was referring to people on the lake. Not on the river.
