Tournament shirts arrive this week/tournament update Posted on April 10, 2017 at 12:12:03 PM by Jeff "Laca" Conway
I should have the 2017 CT FL RI Championship shirts that many of you have placed - sometime this week. Twenty shirts were ordered for this first round of ordering and a second and final round of ordering will take place in a about 3 weeks from now. A few players confirmed to participate have not ordered the shirts yet. This is the official shirt to wear in the tournaments taking place June 2-3 in Berlin, Connecticut at Matt's Court. This is the 3rd year of the successful tournament and a second date is likely to be scheduled later in the year.
Team Florida will be playing without Rocco and Belota who are playing at Ft. Piece in the month of June. However, Florida has added ex-pro Ricky, and former amateur champion Brodie who won amateur championships in Connecticut back in the early 90s to join regulars Scott King, Anthony, Thomas and Laca. Julio has not said if he is playing or not, while Eric L is making efforts to play this year.
The father-son duo of Castanos and Kyle will be playing with the 21 year old making his debut there.
Officials are most excited about Randy and Daniel participating. Randy, aka "Four Decade Pro" threw the first pelota in the first pro game ever played in the state of Connecticut - in game 1 at Hartford. He'll be literally just a few miles away from that historic event. Daniel is considered one of the top backcourters of all time, playing at Tampa and Miami Jai-alai.
Tournament action is set for Friday night and all day Saturday.
Airfares to Hartford have remained low and is still a good deal on Southwest and JetBlue. Most players are coming up Thursday morning on the Southeast flight at will be once again playing at Jai-alai Heaven Thursday afternoon before practicing at Matt's court that Thursday evening.
Trips to New Haven for pizza on Friday and to Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday evening are also planned. The weather in early June is expected to be gorgeous in Connecticut. We have been lucky the first two times up there - the first event in December 2015 had temperatures in the 60s and the last event, held in October 2016 was gorgeous with the colors changing.
