He knew that most of his family should be napping in the den since they liked their beauty sleep so much. He always liked to tease Xerxes that if he needed beauty so badly, he should just never wake up. That never seemed to make his brother laugh though. Oh well, it was his own fault if he couldn't take a joke. He wondered if there would be any other pups about Asteraia out and ready to play. After all, the cooler weather was giving into the first white stuff he'd ever seen and it was a new mystery to be solved! His parents had tried to explain it to him but most of it just went through one ear and out the other. Stuff that came from the sky? How did it come from there and why did it stay on the ground and not just go back up to the sky? Why was it wet and cold? It was like water being everywhere or something.
He shook out his coat more frequently as he ventured out, not wanting too much to be on him in case it weighed him down or something. He tried to dig through the white to get to the wet mud beneath it so he could roll in it, sure that the white was just a trick to make it look clean. He should have known his sister Tikal would eventually follow him out of the den though. Xerxes and him might be rivals to the end but Tikal was his little sister and he would always have a protective instinct over her. Sure, he tried to spar with her and teach her how to be tough but she was the only one he would apologize to, if only in muted mutters and whispers, if he ever got too rough and made her yelp or cry out. She had a way of actually making him feel bad when she got hurt. But she was his only soft spot.
She managed to catch up to him right as he face planted while trying to chase the rabbits. Not his greatest moment. She ran up to him, whimpering and started to clean his face. He scrunched up his nose and tried to pull away from her, even bringing up his paws to try to push her face away gently.
"I'm fine, Tikal, really. Not necessary. No bleeding, see?"
He tried to show her that he didn't have any cuts or anything, just a bruised ego. When she asked what he was doing out here, he shrugged lightly and scowled, looking around as if the answer was plain to see.
"Nothing. Just stuff. Hunting rabbits. Digging in the snow. You?"
It seemed only fair that she answer him now that he had answered her, right? Then she turned her head, seeing the rabbits dart away into safety before asking if he was trying to play with the rabbits. He shuffled his paws. She'd caught him but he didn't want to admit it, shrugging again nonchalantly instead.
"No. Maybe. Icky? It's not icky. It's fun. Watch this!"
He got distracted easily so when she called the snow icky, he was quick to try to prove her wrong. He shook off the dust again and jumped in the nearest snow pile, almost disappearing from sight. He laughed and sent a flurry of it at her, rolling up the best snowball he could with his paw before launching it at her. He grinned, hoping she would see the fun in it and maybe, just maybe, she'd forget about the flowers. He didn't really want to help his sister dig up flowers. That was a little too girly for his taste. He would just keep her distracted!
