Lion's Park Posted on April 29, 2017 at 10:03:42 AM by Joce
There is a serious issue that is being ignored every season and we know why. Balls flying out of Lion's park are a real issue, not only to the vehicles driving there but mostly, for the quality of the games being played there.
The park was built for Fastball and is not meant for the new bats being used to play slopitch. Every game, especially in Men's or Mixed higher divisions, it has become a homerun contest. Teams are running out of balls and frustration ensues because the home team feels like the visitors should help retrieve the homerun balls. This has regularly created unnecessary delays in many of the games that I have umpired there.
Also, it defeats the purpose of the game: offense AND defense. We all know that while some guys are strong enough to hit the ball out of Lion's park swinging whatever you put in their hands, most who hit it out do it solely because of the bats that they swing.
Yet, there is an easy solution to all of this: force men to use wooden bats at Lion's park! Even in the homerun contest for the Sheila Bishop tournament (wooden bats only), rarely does the ball is hit over that fence. Either that or call a ball hit over the fence by a man, an out!
So once and for all, for the good of the game, step over the big egos who refuse to address the problem and deal with the issue.
Or perhaps, if egos are too prominent amongst the voters at the AGM, should we take the matter to the City of Penticton to enforce a rule similar to Skaha park? Enough already! Replies: There have been no replies.
