I agree with you and note that trends can change. I am a fan of all lifting, raw, multi-ply, and single ply (which is what I did). Raw is popular now but I question whether the top guys will have longevity. My admittedly unverified belief is that doing a lot of raw maxes in the competition lifts isn't good for longevity. It would not surprise me to see geared lifting make a comeback. It took off in the late 90s/early 2000s when the economy was doing well and people were flush and had money to spend on gear and traveling to meets. There aren't a whole lot of big meets now that people travel to regardless of whether equipped or not. My speculative opinion is that younger lifters don't have the spare funds to mess around with various kinds of gear to see what works and travel to meets. But that could change down the road.
