aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Seraphina was at a crossroads.

She had spent the winter avoiding her parents, and by extension Kael, but she knew that she couldn’t do it forever. Sooner or later, Sera was bound to run into them. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Kael - she actually liked him quite a bit; he was rather nice - but she couldn’t see herself with him. Seraphina liked Kael, but she didn’t love him. And, having lived somewhere where most vargs were mates out of love, being raised in a pack with two alphas who, to her, embodied love, Sera couldn’t shake the feeling that it was important. Maybe her parents loved each other in their own ways, but it seemed that power mattered more to them than love did. That was what the whole betrothal was about after all. Power and alliances. She and Kael were merely pawns in their game.

Seraphina was too young to know about love. That was what her parents had told her when she’d tried to convince them that it wasn’t right for her to marry Kael. Perhaps she did not see all that Kael had to offer, but over time she would learn to love him. Maybe she was young, but Sera was not so young that she was clueless. She would be an adult soon enough. And in the months that she’d been avoiding her parents, she’d had a lot of time to think. Think about herself, love, and… and Vladimir.

The prince was another face she had been avoiding. They hadn’t parted on the best of terms last time and Vlad had seemed to be in a rather fragile state. Kal and Sebring has dropped quite a bombshell on him and that, mixed with the betrayal he’d felt from Sera had hurt him. The princess felt guilty for not telling him earlier, but what could she have said? She hadn’t remembered Kael until he showed up at the border and there had never really been a good time to bring up her parents. Seraphina supposed that she’d felt that she could live her life without them ever coming to find her. It was a stupid thought, she knew, but a small part of her had believed it. But Vlad had deserved to know. He was her best friend. Or at least he used to be. Seraphina wasn’t sure what he was now. He probably hated her.

What Sera had realized in her long hours of mulling over her thoughts, was how she felt about Vladimir. The warmth that filled her chest when they were together, the tingling that ran up her spine when they had brushed against each other, all of it had led her to one conclusion. It was probably too late now though. Her parents cared nothing for how she felt on the matter and Vladimir was angry with her. Maybe if she had thought it over earlier and hadn’t been so stubborn to accept it, things would be different.

A chill hung in the air as the ethiopianess slipped out of her den. Though it was spring, the cold was loathe to leave and early morning was its favorite time of day. Sera doubted that she would ever become accustomed to it. Her breed were not built for cold after all, but it was far more manageable than it used to be. Besides, the sunlight helped to warm both her and the air and it was the main reason that Seraphina was leaving her den so early. Spring signalled a time when she could comfortably watch the sun rise and turn the sky pink and gold. The winter sun was too bleak and though the spring sun was not as brilliant as the summer or fall, it was beautiful in its own way. The colors were gentle and pleasant, the light softer than in later seasons.

As much as Seraphina wanted to tell herself that she sought out the sunrise only because it was beautiful, she knew that it wasn’t the reason. It was more special than that. It reminded her of Vladimir and the moment that they had had. Though it had been the same day that her parents had come, the two events felt months apart. Maybe a part of her hoped to run into him watching another sunrise or maybe she just wanted to reminisce, but she had been drawn to the dawn since then.

Sitting on the edge of the lake, watching the colors illuminate the sky, Sera wondered what sunrises were like back where her parents lived. She had resisted a move up to this point, but if she and Vlad were simply going to go back to being strangers than what was the point in staying. The princess had no other ties to this land. What was the point if the distance between the two continued to grow?
