Some are born great
Some achieve greatness

She had turned to look at him, and as he peered up at her he was reminded once more of her heritage. For as he had come upon her the dawn had peaked over the mountains behind her and bathed her in its radiant glow. His golden rimmed arctics squinted in pain from the sun's rays but still he stared at her. He both loved and hated her, hated that he loved her... but hated that he hated her too. Perhaps this pain was just the physical reminder of the pain in his heart, because he knew she would be leaving soon, leaving him like all others had left him too. Even Castiel - his twin, his other half, the yin to his hang was gone. Castiel had calmed and soothed him when he anger had gotten too great, Castiel had followed him and supported him, Castiel had loved him. Castiel was his... his best friend.
Tears sprung from his wells and frantically Vladimir swept at his eyes with his front paw, his fur managing to swipe away what would have left darkened tracks in his skin. The exact reason he was crying was not something that Vladimir could pinpoint, and he was not ashamed of it by any means... no... it felt like he had at long last been able to release some of what had welled up inside of him. And so he had said her name, just once, and stared at her. Her unique pelt and form, which had at first reminded him of the kalaks if for no other reason than because that was the only specimen even remotely similar to her and her sister, now set ablaze in a backsplash of pinks, reds, and oranges. She seemed to be at once greater and smaller than she was, the dawn both amplifying her colors and yet reminding him that in comparison to both the size and plan of the world, one wolf meant little. And then she turned, as he knew she would, and echoed with his own name.
For a moment, Vladimir thought that she had become an angel, and finally he had to turn away, for as she neared him there was nothing to block out the direct sun and the pain of that Vladimir could not bear. But what he did not recognize was that a few moments before he truly looked away, the pain ceased. The fire burning with his eyes was no more before he had even averted his eyes... No, he would not have realized that because he was following the path of her feet now as she neared him. Once again she echoed his name, this time his full name properly which was so odd - it was rare that she called him 'Vladimir' or he called her 'Seraphina'. Vlad gritted his teeth - she had chosen to become formal with him now that she was leaving, hadn't she? The anger grew within him, and he felt, he knew that something was different. He mistook it for the knowledge that Seraphina would leave today, but his common sense was lackluster and did not argue in opposition. And then she spoke the one little question, and he erupte, spewing forth. He wanted to and wished he could hold it all back, but he could no soonertear the sun from the sky.
"What am I doing here? I am Prince Vladimir, I am the heir to these lands. My parents left me and took Castiel even though they made it clear that we were both to stay. I am here because this is my hoe, this is where I live, where I was born, where I sleep, and likely where I will die! Why are you here Seraphina?" He was incredulous, his vocals nearly barking at her and he could not understand now why his eyes hurt once more, why he was suddenly in sharper pain than before. "Why have you not left with you and yours - after all your parents bade you leave with them, unlike mine I might add. Plus don't you have to go get married? Won't your betrothed be looking for you?" He huffed in exasperation and turned away briefly before whipping his head back to face her. "Why did you even come here at all Sera if all you were going to do is rip my heart out!?"
He would have left then to save his pride. He would have shamefully hidden from her until she disappeared with her family and Kael, and come to regret for all the remaining years of his life. He would have searched for her later, in vain, when Sera was already married, and either neither found her or instead find more pain by seeing her with another, with pups of their own. He would have never loved again and grown bitter in his loneliness and never take the throne from Aindreas because he would be the new broken one... but then instead fate took him down a different road.
And Vladimir screamed.
The heat that had been boiling inside of his came to a head and he collapsed in front of her, both of his front paws frantically rubbing and scratching at his eyes. It was a more acute agony than anything that the princeling had ever experienced and he alternated between screaming and whimpering, all the while writhing upon the ground. Blood poured from his pools in long streams, staining his face and his paws even as he swept at his face. He felt it radiate from his eyes down through the rest of him, through his back, his ribs, extending down toward his paws. And then, suddenly, abruptly, it all stopped, as did his heart.
He was still, too still for any wolf that was still living, and his paws fell away from his face, and if Seraphina looked closely enough she would notice rims had fallen with his eyes - blue rims, rimmed in gold. As soon as these rims hit the ground, his heart began to beat again, a steady "lub-dub" that had him gasping for air once more, thankfully without the prior pain. Unsteady limbs came underhim and he rose, trembling all the while. Slowly, he peered up at Seraphina, and while nothing seemed different, he knew that it was. "...Sera...? What... what...?" And then his eyes would raise to find hers. And the pools that looked at her would be different - she would see alien eyes to her knowledge - for they would be a brilliant, almost electrifying blue that had not a single drop of gold to mar them.
