ORHAN

Orhan watched her come with a bittersweet feeling twisting in his gut. Oh, A'idah. It had been so long, and so much had happened. The days of their scheming and confiding in each other were over; his mother was dead; El Halin, the culprit, was gone; all but two of his family had left him or disappeared; one of those, his grown son, had taken over control of the desert for him the last few months. Orhan was a different stallion to the one A'idah had known before, and he could only imagine that she had been through just as much in their time apart.

One thing had not changed, however: the hard thumping of his heart at the sight of her, one reserved for just two mares in his entire life. She had always held a grip on him that she would never know, and that he had never been able to confess.

He regretted being seen in such a state by her, but he was beyond feeling embarrassment with all that had happened, and so when his old friend expressed concern for him, he pressed his lips together in a wry smile and shook his head dismissively. "Life," he replied, "and too much to speak of right now. But I am fine, I promise you." He met her eyes - honey-brown just like his own, but with so much more life in them - and lifted his head to look down at her with admiration.

"I could swear you are a vision, A'idah. Sometimes I could swear I dreamed you up and that you were never real at all. What are you doing back here?"
