KORAY
The storm had rolled in without warning. One moment the herd was scattered around the oasis, the next they had taken shelter in the overhang of a large rock while the world around them turned rust red. It was nearly impossible to breathe, let alone see, so they could do nothing but wait it out and press their muzzles against each other's bodies to stop the sand from getting in their nostrils.
Mercifully, the storm moved quickly and began to dissipate after just a few minutes. Still squinting, Koray turned his eyes to the oasis before them and watched its shapes slowly materialize back into reality. When the sky had faded to a pale orange, he became aware of a silhouette that had not been there before. It was horse-shaped, and it was moving.
Without hesitation, Koray ducked his chin close to his chest so that his forelock shielded his face, and braved the gritty air to approach the figure. The stranger was small and lean, and when he pulled up next to her he saw that she was so smothered in sand that her color was nearly unidentifiable.
"Follow me," he ordered her, and turned tail to retreat back to the rock. He avoided the overhang under which his family sheltered, instead leading the stranger to another, smaller hideaway around the other side where they could be alone. Once out of the remnants of the storm, the stallion shook his coat and blew hard to clear his nostrils of sand.
Green eyes gone bloodshot and watery from grit finally found her. "Who are you?"
