WRAP ME UP, UNFOLD ME Priya had always enjoyed exploring, although she typically didn’t go alone since she wasn’t very good at it. When she ventured away from Salem that day, she was a little worried that she wouldn’t be able to find her way back – after all, she had only found her way there accidentally. But she had heard such wonderful things about the big island across the water, and eventually the temptation was too great to bear. When she pulled herself onto the shore, Priya couldn’t help but shiver. It was autumn, as they called it here, and the sun was high in the sky but it provided no warmth – only the cold breeze brushed against her skin, turning the water that cloaked her icy. And yet, despite the cold, the land was greener than any place she had ever seen before – although the trees were brown and amber, dropping their leaves with each passing breath of air, the grasses beneath her feet were still verdant. Gasping at the beauty of it all, she moved forwards slowly into the greenness. The soft sound of running water in the distance caught her attention, and she headed in its direction, her head flicking from side to side as she struggled to drink the sights in. When she saw the small waterfall which rested up ahead, she couldn’t help but burst into a brisk trot, heading towards it excitedly. The water in the deserts back home, and on Salem, was rare and spread out – to see it here, running so freely and abundantly, was a novelty indeed. Her hooves uncertain on the muddy bank, she stumbled clumsily into the shallows of the pool, where the gentle roar of the water filled her curved ears. With a smile of awe she looked around, then lowered her head to drink. priya
