In the shadows of two of the tallest peaks in the mountain range, rests the land known as the Forbidden Dale. The forested path that winds down out of the mountains is steep and treacherous to those who do not know it's dangers. The mountains meld into rolling foothills - filled with broad gentle slopes, long narrow ridges, and miniature valleys. Vegetation of all sorts is abundant and the runoff of all the surrounding hills funnels into a long, narrow lake in one of the largest valleys. Beyond the undulating and green foothills resides a dark and deep forest; the trees are so dense that it is dim even in the light of day.

The herd list has been cleared, but I will add back any herd members who rejoin here on Beyond.
July 9th - Updated the board. Rhaego has an open post in the lake for this breeding season for anyone interested. Also welcome Bastille whom will be serving the Dale in return for a home for himself, Larka, and their daughter Valerian. Rhaego is actively working to return Aileen back to the Dale.
December 7th - After unintentionally forfeiting his land about a year ago, Rhaego has gotten him land back! He will be working on re-establishing himself and the herd that he had. There's a little adjusting to do but Rhaego is back and more determined than ever!

To say that Rhaego was proud of Melia's actions would be an understatement. There had been some surprise after he had discovered she answered the battle summons and perhaps even more that she had returned home victorious, but she was indeed of his blood, so it was not terribly surprising. However, it was apparent that not all of his offspring were so faithful to their home like Melia, even those who showed such promise; so maybe it really was something to be said about Melia after all. At the very least, he did not seem to have to be concerned about where she spent her time like others. He'd learned that much after the events which had occurred last winter right here in the Dale. Melia had come across the very one who had once held such promise as heir; the lost prince whom had the gall to attempt to return 'home' when the scents of a certain foreign land still lingered on his hide. It will suffice to say that the father-son reunion had been volatile yet short-lived and Rhaego was grimly satisfied that his threatening words had not been ignored, for they had not seen the bay stallion with the blade horn since that wintry day.

The mealy King had realized before that Melia was especially dedicated to the forest and territory much like her mother, but it hadn't really been until after the confirmation of Arakh's whereabouts and after he had returned from his own expeditions that he truly saw as more than just the daughter of the (often annoying) forest nymph, but also as his daughter. Not that he didn't already of course see her as such, but now he saw it with pride... more than before. She'd proven herself as a leader of the Dale in his absence, fair and square, and Rhaego had not challenged her upon his return. He found no reason to - for she had only done what he would have done himself - and in fact, already had done once before. The burly stallion had had a good smirk when he learned it was Zurok she had beaten at the Summit. Though the important thing that Rhaego realized upon his return was that Melia had not done what she did to rebel against him, just to protect what was theirs. He'd acknowledged her as an equal (or as close as a mare could be to his equal, though she came pretty darn close) and the two of them together became a united leadership over their home and he felt that the Dale was stronger for it already.

Since then, he'd been impressed by Melia's vigilance against would-be thieves during her relatively short time in the leadership position, thwarting each attempt at both Larka and herself before either really had a chance to succeed. It was an impressive indeed, and garnered from him more respect for his young daughter. Apparently he had not looked hard enough at her previously to see the potential that lay in her.

Thus far Rhaego was pleased they'd seemed to work alongside each other with ease, needing little direct communication to achieve their shared goals of defending what was theirs and truth be told, Rhaego actually found that he enjoyed this harmonious feeling and the sense of accomplishment that came with it. And as he walked along the paths that wove through the dense forest, the older stallion carried himself with a renewed confidence and arrogance, thick neck arched lightly at the crest with wedge-shaped head lifted high to survey the details of his surroundings more thoroughly than the occasions when he ran these very paths to do a quicker check of the borders.

He'd started off his travels that morning through the Dale with the intent of running into Melia at some point, for though things were running well in the herd at the time, he still felt a need to check in on her and see what matters she tasked herself with. They were both equally accountable to the future of the Dale and Rhaego disliked leaving it to pure faith that she was sharing in the responsibilities as was expected of a king or queen. For his own peace of mind, he needed to see for himself.

He stayed at a confident but leisurely pace in the direction of areas that he knew his daughter frequented, in no real hurry for he knew he'd stumble across her eventually. And indeed later that day, he crossed the familiar and distinctly floral scent that belonged to Melia, strong and fresh; he'd began trailing her then, walking a bit swifter with the intent of catching up with her. He'd not gone far when he heard a soft call ahead, almost indistinguishable against the steady cacophony of forest sounds from his distance. Melia? The young mare was normally so quiet that it was difficult to place her voice, but he did not believe that to be her. Another scent mingled with hers, similiar and different all at once. It was vaguely familiar, but not one that Rhaego often caught.

Something nagged at the mealy dun stallion about that voice and scent, but he could not place why, at least not yet. Yet he knew it was wrong. Picking up the pace to a swift and ground-covering trot, he made the decision to find out exactly why. Weaving through the trees with familiar ease, the brute drew nearer to the pair - nostrils flared and mahogany eyes actively searching the dense trees ahead. It was his varnished co-leader that he saw first against the green of the summertime forest. Shaking his tangled mane, Rhaego called out with a throaty whicker to his daughter - perhaps the two of them together could root out this stranger whereever they hid. It was then that Rhaego noticed the smoky black youth that lingered in the shadowy areas between them with a start - and for just a moment his steps faltered, slowing to fully take in the colt and to let the recognition sink in. However the moment that it did, the King of the Dale bellowed with ears vanishing flat into his mane and lunged forward, teeth bared and a fury burning brightly in his eyes. How was this colt still alive?! The incredulity he felt only fueled his anger - for he had assumed without a mother, this bastard would suffer and wither away like his father deserved to do. But clearly, the colt had not and somehow mangae to elude his attention in the past. That could be remedied easily enough though, Rhaego thought, gnashing teeth at the youth and striking out forcefully with his powerful forehooves as he charged the orphan, taking advantage of this hopeful element of surprise to end matters once and for all.
