A Promise Was Made ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ 'No, I don't think you know what I meant - I didn't - Not like that . . . You're my best friend, and like a little brother to me. I didn't . . . I want you to stay, I really do, but you keep disappearing to your father and heavens knows where. I get worried . . . And I wonder if I should have you be in the pack meetings or not or if I should be relying on you or . . . If I can count on you. If you'd like to stay . . . I'd like you to be my Beta . . . You're old enough, and certainly have the strength behind you. I trust you, Drizzt.' Drizzt shook his head as a smile fell upon his face, but it was quickly met with concern and confusion. He had never known whether... He had never submitted to her and she had never asked him to. The cremoro had been a loner for so long now and had only been staying here because... well because Motionless was his only friend. He had had nowhere else to go, or at least no where else he wanted to go. He had wandered in and out of Malignant Felicity because... well because he saw nothing wrong with it. Drizzt had no home... or at least, he did not believe he had a home. But was not home where the heart was? He loved Motionless - that much was true - as a sister, as a mentor, as a friend. For now, his only friend. And he had hurt her deepl with his words - that much was easy to see in her eyes. He knew he well enough to see right through her and yet he had been wrong - so wrong in his accusations. The ivoro took a deep breath and shook his head. "I... I'm sorry Motionless." Always he had berated his father for following Stormy Horizion so blindly with such complete and utter devotion so as to not see anyone or anything else. On Stormy's word alone, he had sent Motionless away when only moments before he had been thanking her for bringing Drizzt to him. And yet here Drizzt was, and at the first questionable thing that she had done he had fled from her and abandoned her. Betrayed her. She had done what she needed to do in order to survive and protect herself from a wolf who abused her and nearly killed her. Though he did not agree with her grandstanding it, perhaps she had a point - she needed to be honest with her pack members in order to gain their respect and trust. Perhaps fear. But already Drizzt had respected and trusted her, so why had he questioned her on this one point? Whether it was the change, or something else, it all now made sense in his mind. But as for her offer... there he was at a loss. "I would... like to stay, that is. But being a Beta... I do not know anything about that. I do not know how to be one. I have only just reached my eligible aged, only just finally finished maturing and have never in all of my life held a rank. What all would I be responsible for? What all does a Beta do?" Drizzt had known a Beta or two - mainly knowing Athene, Pierce's Beta. She had been at Pierce's side inseparably, but had rarely interacted with Drizzt... and so he did not know what she actually did. "I want to be there for you and support you, but I do not know...
