where did the human go?

She knew it wouldn’t last. This pretend paradise they made, lost in the forest. It was made to fall to pieces and it didn’t surprise her.

The tears make her uncomfortable but she looks at him anyway. His voice aches with a deep-rooted pain and she doesn’t understand at first. His words don’t make any sense but the venom in the way he says it’s good your sterile fractures something inside her. Echidna holds her breath as he continues to barrage her, he brings up Cash, their twins together before Echidna left everything behind –

Everything for him but it didn’t count. In this moment, she realizes he’s syphoned her memories and her hand flies up to her neck, her mouth becomes a hardened line. He’d taken from her. She wants to leave because what was the point anymore? This was never going to work, no matter how hard she tried to make things better and the very idea of him stealing her memories makes her entire body shiver. She watches him cut his wrists and the blood pours out, down his pale arms and palms until there’s a curtain of red. Had he only gone along with this whole thing because he wanted to take her memories, wanted to go where he wasn’t supposed to? Echidna feels oddly used.

She puts her tunic on, reaches for the remnants of her trousers. Her eyes are blurry with tears, mud, and blood. She wipes at them with the back of her hand.

“I gave Cash those kids because he wanted them, he needed them. I killed our son and then I was ripping his heart out to be with you because you were the one I loved,” she says. “I didn’t even carry them inside me.”

It’s hard to remember the details now, it’s been so long now. All she can remember is Cash human and in the big field. Tarquin asking her to run away – had it meant it or was he lustful and didn’t want Cash to have dibs? There’s so many questions in her mind now that she knows he’s capable of taking from her without even trying to understand. “He took some DNA from me and they were just made. I don’t even know what they look like.”

Echidna takes a deep breath and finishes tugging on her trousers. They have rips and holes all down the legs now. “I guess it doesn’t matter, does it? You’re always going to see the bad things about me but maybe there isn’t even any good to see anyway.” She bites her lip hard and wrings her hands in her lap.

“For all the memories you took, you decide to focus on that,” she chuckles humorlessly at the thought. “I blamed you very little of the misery in my life, you might have been able to detect the disappoints and the moments when I questioned how you felt about me – but you couldn’t even feel how much I loved you? How it ripped my soul out when you didn’t want me anymore, how I blamed myself over and over because I know it’s my fault you can’t trust me.”

Echidna shakes her head.

“I would have followed you anywhere, been anything you needed. I loved you in a way that scares me because it consumed so much of me and I just loved you more for it.”

She gets up and dusts her shredded clothes, tries to wipe away the rusty stains on her cheeks. Her hair turns a flat black. “All I ever wanted was to be with you, to know you loved me as much as I loved you but,” she looks down at her ground and laughs again. “Take a minute to think about just how many people I’ve been with, that I’ve felt any emotion for at all, since I left Cash for you and then you take another minute to think about how many are on your list.”

Echidna pulls her tunic aside and exposes the bite in her neck, “here, come see for yourself. See what the score is and then you can start hating me all over again.”
