He must have surprised the older wolf because he raised a brow like he didn't know what the heck Fen was talking about. He didn't know what that was about but at least he was going to committ, right? He could live here and train with Avdantil and still train in Diveen with Neveah to be a spy, right? That seemed like a good plan to him so until someone told him he couldn't, why not? And even then, he probably still would try. He wanted to be the best and you don't just get like that overnight, you know. He could work with multiple trainers and learn twice as quickly. Sounded like a good plan to him, anyway! When the wolf's ears pulled back, Fen tilted his head, but then the wolf called him sneaky and started to walk around him like he was looking him over. Fen straightened up and tried to look as big as he could get. He knew he wasn't going to be a huge wolf by any standards, but he hoped his size would make him get underestimated and then if he knew something about fighting, it should give him an advantage.
Finally the wolf got back around to his head and stopped. He knew if he juxtaposed next to pretty much any other wolf in Moladian, he probably wouldn't amount to much but he knew good training would change that. Then he said to follow him and with a wrinkle of his nose, Fen followed him further into the packlands. Finally the wolf gave him a name to call him by, Avtandil. It was a strange name, for sure, but then so was Fenyang. He nodded. He snorted when he gave him a shorter name to call him by. "Naw, that sounds even worse. I think I'll stick with Avdantil. No offense." He offered a savvy smirk and then stopped beside him to look around. Why were they stopping here? Fen's ears tilted side to side, searching but coming up short. Then there was the command. Catch something quick? Must mean like a rabbit or squirrel or something. Okay, well Fen had actually gotten pretty good at catching rabbits, having grown up around them. His sister Tikal only wanted to play with them but he learned early on that they tasted good too.
But that was almost too easy. No, he would pick something different. He'd also been practicing other maneuvers too, figuring that the more surfaces he learned to work with, the better hiding spots he could choose for spying and eavesdropping. As he moved away from Avdantil, he grinned, his ears tilting again and this time he picked up on the small but subtle sounds of a squirrel picking at an acorn shell. It sounded close enough so he crouched and moved forward slowly. He knew he wasn't an expert at being silent by no means but he was getting better. As the squirrel came into view, sitting right at the base of a tree, Fen knew he would have to be quick and figure out his moves beforehand if he wanted to come back with a prize for his new trainer. His ears folded back and his tail swept the ground to keep him hidden as he studied the tree behind the squirrel. He knew that would be its first go to for escape so he needed to be prepared. There were smaller branches near the base that he could probably reach. And he was light enough where they should hold.
When he got about as close as he was going to get without the squirrel noticing, he launched forward at full speed, already snapping his jaws in case he got a lucky shot. Of course that was asking for too much. The squirrel darted up the tree, making its way to the first branch because it figured it would be safe there from a wolf on the ground. But that's where the squirrel was wrong. He threw himself right up the tree after it, still snapping his jaws right on its heels as he managed to scrabble his way onto the branch as it started to sway and fold. The squirrel was starting to panic now and immediately leapt up to the second branch up and headed for the end of it so it could leap to the next tree where escape would be emminent. But Fen wasn't giving up so easily. He maneuvered toward the end of his own branch even as it folded lower still. As the squirrel got closer to the end of the branch and got ready to leap, he suddenly launched upward, twisting his head around the second branch to grab the squirrel in mid air. The squealing was terrible but it didn't last long. Fen fell back to the ground, landing with a hard "Oof!" sound as his legs folded but he started shaking his head vigorously as the squirrel struggled and then he put his paw over the head of the squirrel and jerked his own head back where he held the rest of the body.
With an audible crack of the rodent's spine, the struggle was over. Feeling quite proud of himself but a little sore on his back leg where he landed, he made his way back over to Avdantil and dropped the squirrel at his paws before taking a seat. He tilted his head, giving Avdantil an expectant look. "What now?"
