Ads. Posted on September 26, 2017 at 03:33:53 PM by annoyeduser
I understand that Boards2Go is attempting to make an income by using ad revenue, and on several occasions now you have attempted to circumvent adblocker and things like that for this reason. However, I feel that the #1 issue the owners/creators/etc. of Boards2Go are missing is the reasons why we feel compelled to use an adblocker at all in the first place.
One of the smaller but valid issues is the size of the ads, i.e. that they stretch the boards and ruin site layouts. If you could set it to something like a maximum width of say 700 and height a maximum of 170, that would allow the banners to fit unobtrusively into the average layout with ease. You could also consider an option that would put the banners at the bottom of a board, where they are the least intrusive but still visible on the page.
However, that is a small issue compared to what has sent us in search of adblockers in the first place. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but your service is predominately used by the play-by-post community, which is largely composed of individuals with difficult home lives and/or younger individuals, many of which are female. We are disgusted but the gross, demeaning, and often borderline NSFW ads. We love this service as it is the only one available to us that fits our exact needs, but your ads are driving us away in droves. Why? Because we're tired of seeing women practically popping out of their shirts, we're tired of provocative messages directed at predominately men ("HOT ASIAN SINGLES IN YOUR AREA!!" "These women will do ANYTHING for you!" "Fun casual dating!!!!!"), we're tired of porn ads, we're tired of disgusting ads (we had the pleasure of seeing a foot rotting with toe fungus for WEEKS, or seeing fraudulent ads like "YOU CAN BEAT CANCER BY DOING THESE THREE SIMPLE THINGS!!" while friends and family members are dying), and we're tired of having to explain to people in our families, work, etc. that we're just reading a bit of writing that someone worked hard on and not staring at this woman with her breasts pretty much exposed. That we're trying to practice our craft and improve ourselves - not visiting some disgusting porn site. I can't even read posts in public for fear of what might come popping up to embarrass me next. Not only that, but our youngest players often fall into the 13-14 year age range. I myself started at a very young age and RPing literally saved my life during an extremely difficult time. The fact that young female players are being driven away by the community because they/their parents see disgusting ads that are unsuitable for them is devastating, and wrong.
On numerous occasions these disgusting ads have been posted in triplicate, or they don't load immediately so you think you're clicking on a post and instead, your computer now has a lovely virus. I recently had to do a factory reset on my brand new laptop thanks to one of these conveniently placed ads, and that's really lame.

A number of your ads literally break your own ToS. We can have our boards deleted and/or wiped for having this sort of thing on them.
Please, I'm begging you guys. Look into some unobtrusive, family-friendly advertising services. I'm sure there has to be some out there, there are plenty of sites I visit where I've gladly turned off my adblocker to support them because their ads are tasteful, obtrusive, and appropriate. Advertisements focused on writing, reading, promotion of new novels (Amazon, etc.) would do wonders, because not only would the ads be family-friendly and appropriate, but you'd also be guaranteed more clicks/site visits. You could also consider opening up a place for donations to help fund any cost(s) associated with the new ads, I would happily donate to see this happen and I know a few others would do the same. You could even consider looking into providing things like paid promotion like FB, where your site users pay to have their site advertised on other boards. Replies:
