Re(1): at 50 has anyone done this?

I would think you'd be just fine doing this. For powerlifting less-is-more a lot of the time. By alternating weeks you will be mentally stronger and get better workouts in. You'll move more weight because you'll be excited to be lifting because it's been two weeks since you've had the opportunity. You will actually look forward to your core lifts and give 150% compared to what you normally do simply because you'll be driven mentally, fresh physically and eager to SFW.
