Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

At the sight of her Kweku felt his dense musculature round with completeness. She was pack… or he needed her to be. Or she needed him to be? He couldn’t… tell, actually. The fact glued itself to his consciousness without specific reason. She was unequivocally important. He was made for her. He had to protect her. The endless list of commands kept him motionless across the large gathering, stupefied as to which instinct to act on. His ears tilted forward while his intrigued silver eyes tracked the silver hairs of her dorsal side. She was delicate in all regards - the polar opposite of him, who was bulky with muscle with a double coat for winter. Her movements were like silk - elegant and smooth. His were wooly - condensed and bearish.

As she bounded away from the gathering, Kweku automatically followed. She was pack, and he went where she did. Unfortunately, the female he tailed probably wasn’t waiting for him, and his lumbering gate did nothing to close the distance between them. She disappeared into the long grasses of a golden field. A short whine escaped his throat as he paused at the edge of the field. He set his nose to the ground and looked for her scent. It was earthy and calming. Beside it, he discovered a rabbit trail. Yes! Rabbit is what they - she? - needed. Kweku camouflaged himself in the golden grass, his coat of browns easily melding with the warm shadows of night.

Hunting was a task he was proficient with, though he was forced into a different style because of his bulk. In slow motion, he softly maneuvered through the brush, to allowed the grasses brushing past him to move and settle with unnoticeable noise. His nose twitched as the hare’s scent became stronger. He charged after a rustle in the grasses with explosive power; the rabbit was dead before it understood teeth were around its throat. Had he missed, Kweku would have needed to find a different rabbit; long, fast chases did not agree with his physique. Although the smell of blood tempted him, Kweku only thought to bring the rabbit to her. He selected the direction which she’d taken previously and cantered off after the trail.

Kweku skidded to a stop when a shriek pierced the fields. His ears perked forward, and he saw the flash of grass move as something darted through it. He followed it at a slow jog. She reached her destination far before he did. And when he peaked over of the blades of the fields at her form near the tree line, his head spun. He caught her a rabbit… but now she had a rabbit. It would be terribly awkward to offer her food now…. maybe it would have been anyways.

What should he say? It sounded stupid to claim, “I was made for you” and weirder to march up and tell her, “we are pack.” First meetings. First meetings… Kweku shook his fur, noisily rustling the grasses he stood in. He strode out, letting moon light reveal his form. Kweku set the rabbit he carried at his paws without looking away from the most-important-female-in the-world.

“My name is Kweku, what’s yours?”

Bah! Idiot! It sounded so dry - low, because his voice was deep, and equally at boring. Kweku bit himself mentally; she deserved far better words than that. Whatever. He was stuck with it now.
