aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

“I think you’re right.” She wriggled into the cave as much as she could without getting stuck. She probably could have gone all the way in if she’d really tried, but it was better to be safe and stay at least partly out. She was smaller than Vlad, so she would have an easier time. Gently, Seraphina reached up with her paw and swatted at a few worms. She didn’t want to kill them prematurely, but they had quite a grip to the ceiling. Slowly, a few began to dislodge and she let out a chuff of satisfaction. When she’d gathered what she had deemed to enough, Sera shimmied back out, scooping the worms on the leaves and carefully holding the leaves in a dipped fashion so they stayed on. Wrapping her tail around Vladimir’s, she gave him a soft nod so he would know to start the trip back to their main den. Seraphina couldn’t think of a time she had been happier.

*************************

Seraphina awoke without the usual warmth of Vladimir by her side and she looked towards the opening of the den with bleary eyes, wondering if she had slept the day away. It didn’t seem to be that late so he likely had some business to attend to. Though it would likely be some time before he took over Aindreas’ place as Alpha, Sera knew that he would make a good one. Vladimir loved the pack and his heart was always in the right place. Maybe she was biased, but he would be great. She knew it.

Shaking her head to clear the rest of the sleepiness from it, Sera’s emeralds traveled to the ceiling, where the glow worms were now thriving. She smiled softly at them, pleased that the cave would now always be light enough for her to see, without being too annoying at night. The princess stood and stretched, licking her lips with newfound hunger. Now that tiredness was gone, that was her most prevalent need. Sera trotted out of the den and into the nearby forest. Since the changes in the land, she had noticed caribou every so often, but Sera knew she was in no position to catch one. That was a job for at least a trio and a strong one at that. She’d been feeling rather sluggish these days anyway, certainly not a caribou catching condition. Instead, Seraphina settled for squirrel. She could have gone fishing as well, she supposed. That probably would have been more convenient. But Sera didn’t especially care for fish. It was nice, but it wasn’t something that she sought out. Terrestrial prey suited her fancy much more.

It didn’t take her very long to catch a squirrel; the forest was abundant with them. She devoured one, but still felt hungry, which she frowned at. It was almost winter yes, but her appetite wasn’t usually this voracious. It probably also accounted for her sluggishness. She’d just be sure to exercise more. Hunting and exploring were easier when you were more in shape. You had more stamina for one thing. Sera had never been especially strong either, so her lithe figure was really her only asset to hunt or fight. Ethiopians in general were much leaner than most wolves.

Having finished her breakfast, Sera decided she would bring some moss to line the den with. The air was already beginning to have a chill to it and though she had Vladimir and his thick coat to keep her warm, it wouldn’t hurt to have something more to insulate the cave with. With a thin coat meant for the heat of the desert, she was maladapted to winter. Grabbing a large mouthful of moss, Seraphina turned back to the den, making a mental note to search for a closer source.

No sooner had she returned and dropped the moss in the back of the cave then footsteps and voices could be heard nearby and two scents hit her. Sera’s emeralds brightened instantly and she smiled, recognizing Vladimir’s instantly. The other was unfamiliar to her and Seraphina cocked her head in curiousity. Her mate entered first and called out to her. “Sera, I am home… And I have a surprise guest for us. Are you here?” Sera closed the gap between them and kissed Vlad’s cheek in greeting.

“And who could this special guest be?” Her eyes glanced around Vlad before landing on an extraordinary pup and her emeralds widened in shock. He looked like a little rainbow, unlike anything Sera had ever seen. But he was adorable, she decided, a warm feeling spreading in her heart. A sudden need to protect the boy ran through her and she smiled at him. “Well aren’t you handsome. I'm Seraphina, but you can just call me Sera if you'd like. What’s your name, little one?”
