S E R A P H I N A
The pup moved to hide behind Vladimir, which Sera couldn’t really blame him for. She had been a very sociable, bold pup, always at the front of any action. She had never been shy or wary of strangers. But not every pup was like that, she understood that much. Sera tried to recall anything that Vlad had said about rainbow wolves - what had he called them? Arcus Irae? - but little came to mind. It had been… a bit far fetched sounding when he had first told her about them. Truly, if Sera was not looking at a living, breathing rainbow pup at that moment, she would have doubted their existence. Something she did remember, however, was that Tempest could not touch the rainbows and she noticed this in the pup’s behavior. She could touch him, right? After all, Sera wasn’t a Tempest. She would wait for the pup to be more comfortable before doing so, of course, but at least she did not have to worry.
The pup introduced himself as Scamander and Sera smiled brightly at him. She had never felt particularly strongly about pups - they were cute and she held no ill will to them, she simply did not feel a pull to them - but recently she found herself adoring them more and more. And Scamander was quite cute, his coat only making him even more unique among the various other wolves in Blossom. Out of the corner of her eye, Seraphina caught Vladimir shaking his head at something and she lifted her gaze and cocked her head at him. A brief glance went from Scamander and Vlad, a silent question as to whether it was something about the pup that he was thinking about.
“Seraphina… you… you are..” Vlad cut himself off and turned his attention back to Scamander, leaving Sera to fill in the blank herself while he showed Scamander to the part of the den that he would be staying in. Sera’s emeralds wandered to her stomach and she had to resist the urge to hit her head in sudden realization. Of course! How had she been that blind to her own change. The added hunger, the extra weight, the decreased urge to run about like she had been doing only months before. It would be a fun story, she supposed, for future generations to hear about how Sera had not noticed her own pregnancy. She and Vlad could laugh about it later. Sera had even brought up the mention of pups when they’d first consummated their love, but she had meant it more as a distant thought. This.. this was very real. And very sudden. Panic welled up in her chest. What if they were too young after all? Vladimir had said he felt barely more than a child himself. What if they weren’t ready? Seraphina liked to have some semblance of a plan in situations like this. They hadn’t even thought of potential names for any babies!
Seraphina jerked in surprise at a soft nuzzle, so caught up in her own thoughts. “Seraphina… you’re... pregnant.” Sera let out a soft hum of agreement, opening her mouth to speak when a sharp pain forced her mouth to snap shut and she cowered, eyes wide and a whine at the tip of her tongue. Oh. Now this was bad. Perhaps, if she had realized she was pregnant sooner, she could have planned a bit. But to suddenly be thrown into birth… well it was overwhelming to say the least. She kept her wits enough not to scream and frighten Scamander. She’d only just met the poor thing, she didn’t need to scare him away already.
“You know… I’m beginning… to… realize that.” Sera forced out through gritted teeth. Another contraction forced her to her knees and Seraphina eased herself down the rest of the way, desperately wishing she had something to bite down on. Her jaw would not thank her later, that was for sure. She could feel wetness behind her, vaguely recalling something about water breaking from an uncomfortable conversation she’d had with her mother, and Sera prayed it meant that she would not have to suffer long. Her eyes squeezed shut, as tightly as though she was trying to hide from a nightmare. She had never been good with pain and this was the most that her body had ever been forced to endure. An increase in pressure had her emeralds snapping open and she stared at Vladimir. Some males would run, she was sure, some would stay. The question was whether this was too much for Vlad or not. “Don’t you dare leave.” She growled, though out of pain rather than malice. Sera didn’t know if she could continue without the knowledge that her mate was close by.
A howl rang out despite her best efforts and Seraphina panted, sweat coating her bodice. All she knew now was that she had to push, the instinct screaming out at her. So she did, she pushed until the pressure was at last released and the pain lessened enough that she could open her eyes. Sera reached behind her and pulled the pup forward, breaking the sac of fluid and cleaning the pup. The fact that it made no sounds did not register with Sera, another round of contractions hitting her suddenly. She pushed the pup - a girl - to her abdomen to nurse. Another scream came from her lips, even as she bit them in an attempt to prevent it, and for a moment she truly did not believe that she could do it all again. But Seraphina was not a quitter. And if nothing else, she would do this for Vladimir. Another round of pushing, had Seraphina silently cursing everything under the sun and gritting her teeth with newfound vigor. It didn’t help much with the pain or the urge to scream, but it was certainly satisfying. At the very least, it did distract her, if only slightly and Seraphina audibly sighed in relief as she felt the next pup enter the world. Again she pulled it to her and cleaned it, noting that this one was a little girl as well. Let her be done, she prayed to whatever being was up there, let there only be two. Like her contractions, Sera could feel weariness washing over her in waves. She was not built to handle this many pups, evidently.
A third round of contractions had Seraphina close to tears, but she seemed to be adjusting to the sheer agony her body was unleashing on her as her teeth was not so tightly ground together. Or she was simply too exhausted to feel the full effect. Soft whimpers left her lips rather than screams and she searched the den with bleary eyes for Vladimir, not aware enough of her surroundings to know where he was. He’d mentioned the soulmate bond to her several a time and if she wasn’t mistaken he could see her emotions… or was it feel? She could hardly think straight. All Sera knew was that she didn’t want him to feel - or see - this. It was not a fate she would wish on any. She questioned how her own mother, her true mother, had gone through such an event twice. Though, to her knowledge it had only been her and Dante she had had to deliver. At different times. One pup seemed far more manageable than 3. And far less tiring, she thought as she pulled the third towards her, eyes barely open. Another girl. Inwardly Sera laughed a bit. Vlad had grown up with a brother, but now it seemed he would be surrounded only by girls. A lull had come over the contractions, giving Seraphina a break. Perhaps that was the last one. She would certainly be lucky if that was the case. Half closed emeralds swept over her three daughters, a warm smile across her face and a warmth in her chest that she had never felt before. Though one was still, and the smile disappeared as Seraphina nudged her. The pup made no noise or movement and its body was cold to the touch. Fresh tears sprung to her eyes and she bit her lip. Pups were meant to be a happy occasion but a darkness had pierced through the light. And Sera felt that it was somehow her fault. Maybe if she’d realized sooner, she could have had a better diet. Or exercised more. Anything if it would have kept the little princess alive.
Without a moment to truly mourn, Sera’s sides began to heave again. She panted with exertion, willing herself to push once more, finding strength she didn’t know she had. A low whine came with the birth of this pup and somehow she could tell that it was the last one, which brought nothing but relief. Forcing her heavy lids to stay open, Seraphina did her duty one last time, allowing the final pup to take its first breaths, and was glad to hear this one crying out. At least it - he, Seraphina was pleased to have a son and thought it would be nice for Vladimir - was alive and she had not failed another child before it even had a chance to live. Nudging the boy to her abdomen, beside the squirming girls, Seraphina’s head fell back, exhaustion finally getting the best of her. Her breathing began to steady, sweat slicked pelt now able to dry off. She had not even had a chance to name the babes, leaving it to Vladimir or for him to wait until she awoke. But for now, she was dead to the world, too tired to even utter a word.
