Television continues to capture film talent. And the last to join the already extensive team of professionals of the small screen is the Basque director Julio Medem. As published by the US specialized media 'Variety', the filmmaker of such well-known feature films as 'Vacas' (1992) or 'Lucía y el sexo' (2001), is preparing a television series called 'Jai alai'.
Medem and the Mexican producer Eva Ruiz de Chávez devised 'Jai alai', as the sport of the tip basket, of Basque origin, is called in Basque, around which the series will revolve, as well as its rise and decline of this sports discipline in United States.
The plot of 'Jai alai' begins in the 70s, when the popularity of this sport grows in the US and Miami becomes a cover for money laundering of drugs; and continues during the 80s and 90s, with the crisis and the decline of jai alai.
With 'El Padrino' (1972) as a source of inspiration, according to its leaders, 'Jai alai' will tell the story of Xalba, the father of a pelotaris dynasty (pelota players) who decides to grant control of his criminal empire in Miami to his son Ategi, who is considered to be the best pelotari in the world.
Co-production between Spain, Mexico and the US, the first season of this project will feature 10 episodes and is scheduled to begin filming in January 2019 in Miami (USA), Mexico and the Basque Country.
It is expected that the distribution of this television show will include Spanish, Cuban, Colombian, Mexican, Irish and Italian characters, among other nationalities.
The last film released to date by Julio Medem is 'Ma ma' (2015), starring Penelope Cruz, while his next film to see the light will be 'The Tree of Blood', a 'thriller' that will have stars to Úrsula Corberó and Álvaro Cervantes.
