Hi Colin
I have been following the posts re the Tottington War Time bomb with interest.
As a former pupil of what was the Tottington Secondary Modern School I rode past the Memorial Gardens every day on by push bike on my way to school. I recall my dad telling me of the circumstances of the tragedy(I was born 1949). Seeing as you are a Tottington lad...a couple of teasers for you.
What was the name of the street cleaner throughout the 60's? He worked from the old Tottington Town Hall building next street up from Laurel St. He was a WW2 Vet and had a ' gammy leg ' but that not hinder his duties. Tottington was always spotless. He retired with a ceremony for his ' service ' and received a testimonial from the Mayor of Bury. Those were the days when people cared for others. Another...what was the name of the Town Hall Yard? Again, where was the bus ' turn around ' situated and what was the number of the bus into Bury? Where was the Cinema and what was it called? What's the history of Stormer Brow and why is it so called? What's the name of the Convent on the way to Greenmount? Who was the Coronation Street actor who bought a bungalow just down the road? (Clue...Len Fairclough's buddy...he topped himself! ). Where was Tower Farm and why was it given that name? Finally... where was ' Totty ' Police Station and where was the infamous ' Dungeon '.
All for fun.
Any of our ' locals ' fancy having a go at the answers?
Geoff P
