Poppy fell silent as Aura's head stopped bobbing and her jaw fell open, trying to ignore the thumping of her heart in her ears and at her throat. Of course Aura was surprised. Of course she wasn't sure how to take it. Poppy clenched her hands together in her lap, trying to ignore the slight twist in her guts at Aura's awkward laugh. If she'd been rejected it would be nothing new, really; Poppy was pretty used to rejection - and abandonment - by now. But somehow... somehow the idea of it hurt more than it had before. Maybe it was because she'd tried so hard to get her life back together, because she was so hoping to show Aura - to show someone - that she was different. Working together... maybe she could actually have a relationship with her mother. It would never be, well, "normal", but it could be their normal. If only Aura would give her a chance...

She inhaled slowly, steadily, as Aura fought to find her answer. Of course it wouldn't come easily to her. She was Poppy, after all. But there was no denying that it hurt, both this hope and this fear that Aura was going to say no. She bit her lip as Aura began to speak, their shoulders dropping almost in unison - Aura's from shame, Poppy's from disappointment.

"Please, if you would just give-" Poppy blurted, her voice unintentionally desperate as her emotions pinched at her belly, and then froze. She blinked a few times. Did... Did Aura just...? She cleared her throat, shifted in her seat awkwardly before she got back her composure. She'd been so ready for a denial, a rejection, that the opposite happening didn't make sense at first.

"Sorry," Poppy said, shaking her head and cracking a grin. "What I meant was, thank you for the opportunity. I won't let you down." She popped to her feet, held her hand out to her mother to shake. "Seriously."

"So... where do I start?"
