the whole world shook, bohdi

TW: Aura's posts invariably contain strong death themes.

For I had believed what I was sold, I did all the things that I was told
But all that has changed, and now I'm bold.

Aura had been called worse things than lady-goddess-dead-lady. Some people put up the most tremendous fight about being brought to the Realm of the Dead and they could be incredibly rude about it.

Bohdi was… baffling. Her catlike eyes glowed gold with excitement as she talked at top speed, making very little sense. A light frown creased Aura’s brow. Instinctively, she fell back on a technique which had always worked with Mallos: honing in on the parts she understood and ignoring the rest. At a basic level, it sounded like what Bohdi wanted was information about her ren, but… Aura glanced at her scythe, twisting it slightly in her palm. She hadn’t been approached for a ren request, or even thought about such things, since her death. From the sound of it another person had directed Bohdi towards Aura because she’d… previously been dead?

That happened, occasionally. Sometimes souls got lost on the way to the Realm of the Dead, especially when Aura’s predecessor was in power. Sometimes, very rarely, they got lost in the Realm of the Dead and wound up back in the Realm of the Living, alive. Miracles happened. As if to confirm Bohdi’s story, the staff twitched irritably again in Aura’s hand and she had to bite back the urge to take the woman’s hand and drag her back to the Realm of the Dead.

Actually, that’s not such a bad idea.

Taking the scythe with both hands, Aura slashed it expertly through the air beside her, creating a swirling black portal just about big enough for a person to jump through. She’d fit comfortably, but Bohdi might have to duck her head. Wordlessly, Aura held out her hand towards her. It must take enormous courage for a mortal to take the Reaper’s hand and leap with her through a death portal, but Bohdi’s grip was firm. Aura went first with the unusual woman following close behind.

They landed in the grey no-man’s-land between life and death. Like the Realm of the Dead, this world lacked colour and the shifting ground had the consistency of cement dust. A thick haze obscured everything beyond about ten metres in each direction. Most interestingly, thin cracks were spaced out across the air, as though they were in a three-dimensional glass tank which had been fractured somewhat. Beyond the cracks were flashes of movement, a myriad of sounds and – through some – bursts of colour.

Aura pulled her hood back down, which put itself up automatically whenever she changed clothes or hopped worlds.

“This is the Realm between Realms.” She gestured about her. “A sort of… limbo, between life and death. You can remain here and stay alive, but you would not last long in the Realm of the Dead without dying… although, from here, you can see through into life and death.” She indicated the cracks. “Did you… were you told your ren was here? Or in death?”

They thought I was weak, but I am strong; they sold me the world but they were wrong
And now that I'm back, I still belong.
