INDIGO
SOFT BREATH, BEATING HEART
AS I WHISPER IN YOUR EAR
I WANT TO FUCKING TEAR YOU APART
She prowled along the border, her nose to the ground, low growls emanating from her chest in spurts. Sister Vasily had run, Mother and Sister Amaranthe and Sister Adrian nowhere to be found. Indigo was alone, and scent trails had been lost. She had come to the plains to find a brother she'd had little contact with but knew existed. Brother Avtandil, he was here, she could smell the distinct scent of their family on the borders, slight as it was. Indigo was restless, pacing. She did not understand what had happened. Once upon a time, a great fire had ravaged their home. A savage and unkind man had torn their family to pieces, scattered them to the winds. This time, the fire burned slowly, and it was unable to be seen or smelt.
Leader Pine's scent had been overtaken by the serpent-smell of another, and despite her confusion, Indigo had known she needed to leave. Sister Vasily's strange new scent was stale by the time that she had awoken, and in her groggy state, she'd stumbled over the borders. Trying to find where they had all gone proved impossible. There was a strange ache in her heart that she could not quite place. It was an ache that seemed to overpower any other feeling. Perhaps it was new. Perhaps it was sadness.
Indigo lifted her head and called out, a hoarse, barking sort of cry that was not quite a howl. The sound of a howl, she thought, might be too close to speech for her to manage. It was, at times, a very inconvenient thing, this muteness of hers. Right now, she wished she could explain, she wished to speak aloud this new feeling of heartbreak. But instead, her emotions were reduced to low, grumbling growls, and the occasional snap at empty air that left her feeling unsatisfied. She hoped that this Brother of hers would come soon, for in these moments she missed the presence of another quite greatly.
