Operation Eagle came off last Friday morning. Inside Ismalia there were two police barracks, the Sanitaire (650 policemen) and the Karacol (750) so we had a large force against us.
Once more we started at dawn, the Army never does anything at a reasonable hour, with 1 Para Regt, 1 E Lancs Regt and 1 Royal Lincs Regt throwing a cordon around the whole of Ismalia. When it was in position 1LF supported by tanks and armoured cars moved into the town and surrounded both barracks. Then the police were told to lay down their arms or we would blast them out.
We gave them quite a long time to make their minds up so when they started shooting at 0830 hrs we knew they meant to stay in and we opened up. The police in the Sanitaire fought quite bravely but they hadn't a dogs chance and we literally blew them out of the joint.
At the Karacol, where I was, they took a longer period to make up their minds to stay in but at midday when we opened up they came out in a hurry and I don't blame them.
The casualty figures were quite high. They had 41 killed and 65 wounded. We had 3 killed and 12 wounded, one of our wounded has since died and another is expected to go at any moment. All our casualties but one, our Sp Coy CSM, belonged to C Coy, the only officer casualty was Major Chance , OC C Coy, who was shot twice in the leg.
The next fortnight should either see us fighting the Eygptian Army or a decission made to end the trouble - I hope it is the latter?
