Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Papa would have seen this as a great moment, reaching out to someone younger, to teach them something. I knew that yes, being helpful would fulfill me in some way, yet, at the same time I wasn't sure if I was that great of a teacher. Oh, well, I guess it was time to see. I gave the girl a gentle smile, my lava eyes sparkling with interest. I motioned towards the half eaten fish at my feet first. "Try the fish before we start, it's easier to acclimate your palate to the taste of this before biting into a wriggling live one. Trust me. My father taught me the hard way, and it was more of an adjustment than I would have liked." I gave a soft smile as I pushed the fish towards her. Alyse.

I looked toward the river, watching the flow of it, giving the girl a few moments to try her first bite of the fish. I knew how I wanted to teach her, so it shouldn't be so hard. "When you're ready, come join me at the edge of the river." I moved towards the waters edge, the tips of my toes dangling over the edge of the bank. I watched the smaller fish swimming closer to us. "The easier fish, smaller fish, will swim towards the edges of the river to avoid the strong current that runs in the center. So typically it's easier to start there, but, I always say, if I'm fishing, I'm getting the biggest I can." I tossed a grin her way before I stepped into the river slowly. I stood in the shallow edge, my head hanging over the deeper, faster current.

The smaller fish freaked by the presence of my legs blocking their path, but they quickly made it past my legs, moving between my legs. The sensation wasn't the best, but it worked. I looked back at her. "Don't go into the deeper quicker water unless you want to be swept downstream. Stand on the shallows. The smaller fish will scatter, but will calm. The larger fish in the center may spook a little, so be prepared to wait a little until they calm down." I looked back, watching as the fish calmed down within the river before me.

"When they've settled, you watch, and when you're ready to try it, hold your breath. The water will rush into your nose, and it will not be comfortable. You can blow out through your nose when you bite down on the fish to get the water out. But you have to strike fast, otherwise the fish will move. Hard, fast, and hold your breath. Those are the best things I can teach."
