I have just picked up the Winter Dendrology Connecting With Conifer handout booklets from the printers and they look great. I am certain that anyone taking this one-day workshop on February 24th will be able to identify the 18 coniferous species that grow in our area by the end of the day. In fact, you will be able to identify them from a distance and will learn several interesting facts about conifers. We will discuss how conifers communicate with other tree species including deciduous tree by using an underground web or network of fungi and how both benefit from this relationship. Amazing facts will be given about white spruce and black spruce and how they survive. I have been working on the presentation for the last two months and completed it last week but now with the handout booklet that are completely different than the presentation you will learn all about conifers and the great role they play in the environment. There are still four spots left on this course as of today.
Our recent weather reminds us about the amazing "wonderland" that winter can provide in Ontario, and it also reminded me to send out an email about our two upcoming winter workshops for the Ontario Master Naturalists program. There is still limited availability in each.
In our one-day workshop on February 24th, participants will learn about the 18 species of conifers local to our area, and the importance of each to the ecosystem they are central to. In the morning, Bob Bowles will provide an in-depth lecture and sketches enabling identification and understanding, and in the afternoon, we'll don snowshoes to take our learning to the next level, outside! Snowshoes are provided for this workshop, which costs $75+HST.
We are also trying something new and exciting this winter - a weekend workshop March 23-25th in Algonquin Park. Join Bob and Patrick for a weekend of exploring all Algonquin has to offer, from birds and diverse wildlife, to an incredible array of trees and plants. Integrating lectures and field experiences, this weekend-long adventure will enable participants to truly experience the history and nature of Algonquin! Bring your cameras to capture the magic!
We'll spend our evenings at the Adventure Lodge, the gateway to Algonquin. All meals are included, and you're welcome to bring your own wine for dinner. Cabins sleep two and include a lovely wood-burning fireplace, and - for the first 12 to sign up - a jacuzzi tub!
