Sperantia
la soledad es un tipo de veneno

A domestic house cat can reach speeds of up to thirty miles per hour when sprinting flat out. Sperantia was fairly sure she’d broken a new world record in her little excursion back to the apartment. She let Croe half-drag Mallos off to be cleaned up, remaining in the lounge area of the main room with her sides heaving. The urge to vomit rolled around in her gut, but she couldn’t tell if that was from over-exertion or just osmosis from her fairy. Sperantia wasn’t usually well-connected enough with Mallos to feel genuine empathy with him, but she’d noticed with hindsight that his feelings tended to seep over to her when he lost control of them. At least part of her panic earlier must have come from him. And when Arthur had died, she’d felt his heart collapse worlds away.

She’d just about regained control of her breathing when Croe reappeared, striding across the living room, her mouth set with determination. She yanked the curtain back into its old position, obscuring the Alhambra complex from view. It was a small gesture, but a loud one.

“That’s a good idea.” Sperantia reflected softly, choosing not to ask where Croe was intending to get medicine at this hour. Hopefully she’d leave some money on the counter of any pharmacy she broke into. Her question made the cat inhale deeply, releasing her breath in a rather shuddery sigh. “If you got all of the virus off, it should only take about twenty minutes for his magic to return…”

Her voice wavered uncertainly, as if there was more which could be said but Sperantia wasn’t sure how to say it, or even if she should. After a brief moment, she simply shook her head, stood up and trotted into the bedroom. Shortly after, she heard the front door click.

Sperantia jumped up onto the bed, scrutinising her fairy with a tight lips and worried eyes. Mallos’ eyes were open (partially), but he didn’t appear receptive to any sensory information. His lips were slightly parted as if to help draw in air to bolster his shallow breathing. The only skin visible above the blanket was flushed with heat, but Mallos didn’t appear to have the strength or presence of mind to pull the blanket down. Only his hair, still damp and glistening from the recent shower, appeared healthy.

By the time Croe returned, there had been little change. Sperantia had peeled the covers back some, but it hadn’t done anything to cool his burning skin. Mallos had shut his eyes but Sperantia could tell, through their psychic link, that he was still clinging onto consciousness. He fought sleep with admirable animosity, and for reasons Sperantia could sympathise with, but it was to his own detriment. Divinity, which had returned – as she’d predicted – some fifteen minutes or so after Croe’s departure, was trying to shut him down for healing. Sooner or later it would succeed, and the nightmares would begin to take hold.

Sperantia had been lying with her side pressed against his, but she sat up when Croe walked through the door.

“Magic’s back,” she reassured her. As if to confirm that statement, a gold spark glimmered briefly over one of his arms, targeting the wounds, before vanishing back beneath the skin again. Sperantia didn’t need to point out that the return of Mallos’ divinity had done little, if anything, to cure him of all that ailed him; Croe would be able to see that for herself. “Sometimes, if wounds or illnesses are inflicted while a person is under the influence of the divine virus, the virus can immunise it against magical healing.” Sperantia said grimly, cutting straight to the point. “The cuts are healing but the infection seems as strong as ever. Divinity’s acting like an antibody, I think, fighting against it… but it could use some help.”

She peered hopefully over the bed, her blue eyes searching for a welcome pack of medicine.

solitude is a kind of poison
