Beware of Identity Theft

When I recently received credit reports (as requested) from Equifax and Experian, I found two instances of fraudulent overdue debt charges totaling nearly one thousand dollars.
They were both from accounts in my name by someone in Hemet, California. I've been in touch with the creditors and the local police, and the matter is currently being cleared up.
Apparently, the perpetrator managed to get my name, social security number and address, and was able to open these fraudulent accounts in my name.

I am protected against the fraudulent use of my credit card, but it sounds like it is difficult to protect against this type of fraud.
