midas

ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for

As the three stood together, Midas could feel the tension rise. Mostly from Macabre who seemed utterly stunned to see him. He couldn’t blame her. She probably felt abandoned, betrayed, or at the very least confused by his departure from the Ridge. He was surprised she was still on the islands and even more surprised to find her in the company of a Peak mare. However as he thought about it more, it started to make sense. When Midas had known Macabre, she had desperately wanted to feel safe and to be part of a family and perhaps an all-mare herd could provide the stability she never found with a stallion - especially a stallion like Midas.

Before he could muse further on Macabre’s life decisions, Rowena directed a question to them both. Midas fixed his steely gaze on her. The spring had done wonders for the mare’s appearance. When they had met in the falls, Rowena had a dull cast to her coat and an overall disheveled appearance. Before him now, she was striking. Her black pelt shined radiantly and instead of dullness, there was a sleekness only found with new coat. He imagined once she gained some more nourishment back she would easily be one of the more stunning creatures to call the Crossing ‘home’. He gave her a quick once-over and a lopsided smile. Midas had always been a bit of a flirt.

The Ridge held both hope and fear for the golden stallion. A reminder of all he had loved and lost. In many ways it was sickly masochistic for him to return to Atlantis but the island had always held a strange power over him and Midas felt drawn to it like a magnet. Though he had always had some reservations about this trip to the Ridge, Midas had been looking forward to going with Rowena. He had been looking forward to getting to understand her more and learning about her mysterious past. Now, however, things were a bit more complicated. He hadn’t intended to go with someone he had betrayed and abandoned.

He sighed inwardly and lopped his mass of golden locks to one side of his face. "Macabre was part of my family - many years ago. On the Ridge in fact." He paused and briefly glanced back at Macabre before returning his gaze to her inky companion. "It was so long ago, probably longer than you’ve been alive." He chuckled and a light-hearted lilt crept through his accented voice. He might be sullen and inwardly turbulent but Midas always loved to laugh. He loved mares who could make him laugh because in their happiness he could imagine it was his own - even if only for a moment.

After a bit, Midas turned towards the sea. He felt the waves tickle his ankles and the sun rise higher in the sky. "We should probably get going. It’s a long swim and I’m guessing you ladies want to be back by nightfall." With those final words, he sank his glimmering body into the ocean. Midas instantly felt the undercurrent’s aide as he pulled away from the shore. The water was cold but not unbearable and the golden stallion felt every fiber of his being tingle with electricity. His heart felt like it had leapt into his throat and stayed there. He could hear it ringing in his ears and pounding in his chest. His strong legs glided easily through the silken waves carrying him further and further away from the Crossing isles.

There was no turning back now. Atlantis was waiting and he was going home.
