Olive gave a slightly wet chuckle at Elina's question, shaking her head slightly. "A bit of both?" she replied. "We went looking for Alder and ran into a pack of venaraptors. Thank the gods we all survived. Well... not all of us, exactly." She looked towards her sister; Cypress' expression was taut with pain as she turned back towards the inn without a word. Olive sighed and shook her head, forcing a smile when she looked back at Elina. "We... When we came to Shaman, we didn't come through together. We were so worried we'd lost him again. A place to stay is the very least we can do as thank you for bringing him home to us."
Shooting a sympathetic look to the rather pale stable boy - and trying to hide her smile at Elina's behavior - she led the way inside. Torram flashed Elina a slightly nervous smile as he bustled around, fetching various items while Cypress gave Alder the lecture of a lifetime. That was usually Olive's job, or her father's, but she was glad to relinquish the duty for tonight; Cypress had been so pale and still these last few hours Olive wasn't sure she'd ever come back to them. Now she was closer to her old self, at least. Olive nodded at Elina's words, surprised to find herself laughing. "Not often, I usually save that performance for special occasions," she replied, grinning herself as the woman made Torram flush several shades of pink. "I'd pay to see that," she said with another laugh, then got back to her feet. "But for now how about I fetch you something to eat? And for your room, did you have any preference? We have rooms on the ground floor or second story. Most cleared out for us when..." Her throat constricted for a moment but she gave herself a stern shake. "Anything to drink?" "Mummy?" came a nervous voice from the steps. "It's alright, baby, go back to bed," Olive replied softly. "But-" "Now, Effie," Olive's voice firmed with a touch of maternal command as she cut off the petulant whine. The rumpled little girl on the steps heaved a heavy sigh and trotted back upstairs, muttering under her breath to the rat in her pocket. Olive closed her eyes and sucked in a shaky breath, forcing herself to stabilize, before turning back to Elina with a smile, waiting for her answer. |
