croeheader

Was there a soul in this world or any other that enjoyed paperwork? Croe wanted to know.

The only sound in the office was the staccato tapping of the three agents’ keystrokes and the scratch of their penned signatures, punctuated by an occasional sigh, groan, or muffled curse. Their desks were arrayed such that they all faced outward, partially concealed from view through the glass walls by their sleek computer monitors – if they had any cause to really talk to one another, they had to turn completely around. Fortunately, there was little reason to talk to one another. Croe’s officemates were strangers to her, and possibly to each other; she had only observed them communicating when they happened to be working the same lead. This was common of field agents, so Croe didn’t take it personally that they never spoke to her. Her lot were a reticent, introverted bunch. By design.

But silent company was still company, and it was strangely refreshing that all three of them were slogging through their reports at the same time. Croe found herself smirking at Juan’s clumsy typing and frequent, aggressive deletions. She could never remember the second man’s name, but she invented a ridiculous storyline about him as she worked, covertly observing his exaggerated facial expressions that he seemed unable to control. He must never go undercover, she mused to herself – that face would be a liability. Instead, she imagined that he was the Mission Impossible type, that you sent in when you needed someone to scale the outside of a glass skyscraper, and punch their way through a window. She wondered what he was reporting.

Croe herself was reporting on the rescue. It was long overdue. She kept it concise and heavily redacted, but there were multiple forms that needed filing anytime she used magic in a public place. A complete waste of time when it came to her magic, of course. Hypnosis was subtle, difficult to trace – it wasn’t like she’d thrown a fireball through a crowd. The muggles were more likely to have noticed her kicking in the door. (Croe left out her visit to the farmacia completely; their own records were so poor, she doubted they’d report a bottle missing here and there).

She was about halfway through when a distraction presented itself.

“So,” Lorraine began, looking right at her, which Croe noticed in the brief glance she afforded the imperious goddess. She continued to type as Lorraine went on, making a point to finish the sentence she’d been partway through, ignoring the sensation of her officemates’ imploring eyes on her back. Though it was known that Agent Kroneon was headstrong and resistant to authority, in this case their assumptions about her reaction were misplaced; she was processing. Lorraine had stressed “friend” in a way that was particularly descriptive, in a statement about monogamy. It was an effort to keep her expression neutral.

”Housewives are wives in houses, and I am neither,” Croe responded finally in a neutral tone, folding her hands in her lap and leaning back a little in the chair. She didn’t bother returning the goddess’ once-over – she knew what she would see, and didn’t feel especially interested. But she did look her right in the face, black eyes meeting turquoise. She wondered if that was her natural color. ”Not that our relationship is any of your business, but no, I neither cursed nor drugged him. Where he puts his cock is entirely his choice.” Even without looking, Croe knew that the two men had gone rigid. She tilted her head a little, one corner of her mouth tightening slightly. Lorraine was beautiful, and should have been terrifying, but jealousy looked absolutely silly on her and Croe was a little broken when it came to instincts of self-preservation. ”Anything else?”
