Darkness encircled everything within these caves, and only those equipped with fine skills could survive here. Sight was often useless, and it would not protect one from the monsters that lurked in the corners and crevices. Often it was silent, and any wrong step would be heard throughout the caves as every noise echoed around. To most, the caves were avoided. They were scary and mysterious, and if you took one wrong turn in them you may never return to the rest of the world. But to others, the caves was all the knew. There were rumors and whispers about another world, one with a sun and other wolves. Wolves that were different, strange beings with no wings to protect them. But was any of this even true? To the Chiroptera, he didn’t know. Rumors were only rumors until proven otherwise. It would be easy enough for one to just make up these stories just for some entertainment. But often times there was some truth to rumors that circled around, and he liked to determine what truth was there and what was indeed false.
So far the skinny stilted male’s life had been within the darkness of these caves. He knew a lot of their networks now, having mapped it all out in his head after weeks and weeks of wandering. Nyfiken was smarter than most, something that he prided himself on. While others could easily get lost, he never had. He had always been able to map his way back to the corner in a cave that he called home. He saw many others as inferior to him, their incompetence and stupidity something that always got on his nerves, and he was always one to speak his mind. Most saw him as rude and standoffish, but if they didn’t understand what he was talking about or where he was coming from, he just scoffed at them. They were not worth his time, and so he lived a solitary life. To most it would be lonely and sad, but even though the male was still young, he had learned that this was what he preferred. He would rather be alone than be surrounded by others constantly annoying him. So while he occasionally came across another of his kind, he didn’t have any to call friend or family. And he saw nothing wrong with this. If others have issues with his way of life, they had no reason to be in it. He owed nothing to anyone but himself.
As a new day began, the almost entirely white male stretched out his lanky limbs and wings, letting them unfurl from his back to their full length for a moment before they pulled back to his dorsum, hiding away in his pelt. They were not the largest of wings, but they were as white as the fur that lined his body. The only color on his farm was on tips of his very large ears and on his muzzle, which was a uniquely bright yellow color. He didn’t really notice the coloring on his muzzle, and it began to fade more and more from his sight as he aged and his candor pearled eyes began to turn a milky white color. Nyfiken was not fully grown yet, and so he was not yet completely blind, but he knew it would be occurring sooner rather than later. But for now he still had lingering color in his gaze, the palest of teals still flickering in his orbs. When he was in the deepest parts of the caves where there was no light at all he relied on his other senses to guide him around, and now he was so used to it that he could travel as easily without sight as he could with. And with his echolocation that was still developing and being perfected, he would never be blind within his home.
The ghost like male silently padded through the caves, his hollow bones keeping him even lighter on his paws than any other wolf could, and he knew where every pebble lay. If he didn’t want to known, he never would be. But today was a day with a purpose. Today he was going to head closer to the opening of the caves, and begin investigating if any of these rumors about a sun and other weird wolves was true. He wasn’t sure what he believed or what he didn’t, it was too soon to tell what was fact and what was fiction. Scents began to change around him with the air as he drew closer and closer. The first hints of the caves end was a slight breeze at his paws. It was barely noticeable, but with his heightened sense he could feel the small changes to the fur, pulling with the direction of the wind that was coming in. He had never thought that the air within the caves was stale or dry, but as the new air reached his nares, there was a freshness to it that was indescribable. Even though there was plenty of moisture within the caves, water dripping from ceilings into puddles throughout, this was different. He didn’t yet realize that it was due to fresh rains and fresher waters, but it was something entirely knew, something that he wanted to explore more. Pearly teal orbs blinked repeatedly as the first glimmers of sun began to squeeze into the cave, and he froze. Was he really ready to just burst into this new world that seemed to exist? It seemed that there was some truth so far to the rumors. There was some sort of large light, some sort of sun, that was beginning to show itself to him. His breath stopped when he thought about it, and how much unknown there was now. He was not used to not knowing things, and his form froze. He needed a minute before he continued to get his bearings, and really prepare himself for this new discovery.
