It was different here, on the islands. Instead of raw, primal wildness, there was the expectation of prim and proper; of asking and not demanding. Asp had played that game before--or tried to--but it was better to admit to the world what he was. A wild thing, unpredictable and chaotic; that was the sort of thing that Asp excelled at being. This world was not a soft place, nor did it offer the heart shelter from its hardness.

Her laughter garnered a snort from him as he increased the pressure, not giving the mare an inch of distance. As it was, her tail flicked against his nose, leaving a stinging sensation on his otherwise numb-with-cold muzzle. When she spoke, Asp eased up on his pace for a moment, breathlessly responding with his name.

“Asp.”

But it wasn’t exactly him she would be going home for. She’d be his first addition to the likely barren ranks of the Lagoon (if it were as desolate as it had been before, anyway) and he momentarily wondered exactly what he was getting himself into. After all, he was possessive in nature; all band stallions were.

Letting out another snort, Asp laced his ears back into his mane and snapped his teeth together on nothing but air in frustration.
