Help or hurt? Posted on May 14, 2018 at 08:32:02 PM by Bennett
My initial thoughts, as it relates to Florida. If FL legalizes sports betting AND allows wagers to be placed online, then I think it would hurt Dania. If FL legalizes sports betting and limits it to only being able to wager at certain places (like the parimutuels) then it could help Dania. That would bring new bettors to the fronton, and (some)sports bettors just may be inclined to place a wager on live jai-alai too. They might like the fact that you find out if you won in minutes, not hours. Like maybe they bet an NFL game but also bet some jai-alai as the football game plays out.
BUT...what would we be talking about here? Would Dania and the tracks etc need to set up and run their own sportsbooks....needing to update the lines etc on hundreds of games from various sports like the Vegas sportsbooks do now? That would require expertise and staff they don’t have now, and seems like an impossible task. Maybe instead they “partner” with an established sportsbook and Dania gets a small commission for taking the bets? That seems more reasonable.
Also to note, based on laws related to Indian gaming....seems like if FL legalizes sports betting in any format then the Seminoles get it too. Replies:
