During 1 1/2 hours of bird-listening early this morning in Covered Bridge subdivision and along South Monck Road, I tallied a remarkably high 9 HOWR. Birdsong traditionally ceases sometime between July 06 and 12. Despite the late date, the ~two km. stretch of South Monck Road through dense Yellow Beech forest was delightfully productive: Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Redstart, two young Purple Finches picking up gravel, Ruffed Grouse on the shoulder and Scarlet Tanager, not a common bird here. One Tree Swallow on the golf course and a glimpse of either Barn or Cliff Swallows at the top of Lankin. Do CLSW still nest there?
