MAJOR EDMUND T GARTSIDE TD DL MA

We regret to announce the death of Major Edmund T Gartside TD DL MA on Sunday 15th July. Edmund was for so many years the epitome of a loyal and dedicated Fusilier. Edmund served for 14 years in the 5th Battalion XX The Lancashire Fusiliers ending his TA service as a Company commander. However, he continued to serve in many other ways. He was a Trustee of the Bury Armoury Drill Hall, President of the Rochdale Branch of the Fusilier Association and a long term Trustee of the Fusilier Museum. As the Finance Director he saw the museum through some exciting and intense times when the museum moved from Wellington Barracks to the Arts and Crafts Building in Bury being instrumental in helping to raise £6.4M towards the project.

In his civilian life Edmund was dubbed Lancashire’s last cotton tycoon, spending 40 years in the family firm, Shiloh’s. The firm once owned 14 mills in Royton alone and in 1997, Edmund spearheaded the takeover of Courthalds in Bolton saving some 350 jobs. Edmund was also a Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and a council member of the Institute of Directors. His energy was endless and he contributed so much through his contacts in the NW to the success of the Roayla Regiment of Fusiliers.

A funeral service will be held at Tuesday 31 July at 10.45 am in St. Michael’s Church, Bamford, Rochdale. Edmund will be missed and our thoughts are with Valerie and the family.

Colonel (Retd) J W Denny MBE
Regimental Secretary
