Some observations Posted on August 7, 2018 at 03:35:02 PM by Jim
First off, finally, some OUTSTANDING thriller points...many of them, primarily in Set #1, from all the players. Really exciting.
Second, Barandika pretty much choked away a match he should have won vs Goiko a few days ago. He gave Goiko at least 10 points when he managed to work the point and get the kill shot line up, or cut serve, only to see kills land out of play or in the pad. It's amazing how well these players play when they are NOT going up against Goiko. The mental factor of playing #1 in the world in every sport is always most vivid.
Third, Olha...this guy plays the absolute hardest of any player out there, and is so wild in his shot selections, but still, you HAVE to want to see him win...lol. If only he could learn to hone it in a bit more...play the point out instead of going for a whacky kill out of position. Love his attitude and emotion on the court. He literally wears it on all his sleeve, every single point! What a fighter.
Fourth, this is really the only think I look forward to in the jai alai world...the summer partido season. Jai Alai here in USA is just uninspiring, unfortunately. This is why players like Diego look so good overseas, as compared to here. They aren't as inspired, either, when, largely, they are sitting on the bench most of the time.
Fifth, I've often wondered how much these guys make playing these matches. It's never mentioned or discussed.
Sixth, REALLY cool to see Olabe as a judge. Does this guy ever age? He looks like a kid, still, and I bet he still has a nice game. He always did.
