Zohar couldn’t help her fascination.

“Part-way through a tree?” She asked, curiosity alight in her tone of voice and every inch of her expression.

She nodded slowly to show her understanding, casting her mind over her own magical abilities. Some of them she appeared to have no control over, like her immunity to fire and her thermoregulation; they just were. She couldn’t just step into a fire and decide whether or not to be burned, her body protected her independent of her will. In the winter, fire ran through her blood to warm her without her needing to ask it. And yet other magics, like conjuring weapons or animals from flames, required exhausting levels of concentration and could flicker and die if her head wasn’t in the right place.

Now that he wasn’t so keen to get rid of her, Matt was cranking out the charm. His grin was infectious; Zohar couldn’t help but smile back, reflecting on how much cuter he looked when he wasn’t looking so mopey. Mohana would definitely be checking him out if she were here.

Their smiles faltered simultaneously. A streak of guilt cut through Zohar’s heart at the thought of chatting to someone Mohana would have found attractive while Mohana was still missing. She took a breath, casting the thought to one side, and latched onto the welcome distraction her companion provided.

“Yeah,” her smile twisted into a little smirk, “Biblical, only you look like the kind of Matt who hides his holy book whenever he brings a girl round.”

Definitely Mohana’s type. Zohar always pretended, usually unsuccessfully, that she didn’t have the same type as her sister. They weren’t identical in every way.

Matt’s choice of a new subject of conversation was an interesting one. Zohar quirked an eyebrow, studying him visibly. A guy in clothes which looked like they (and him) had seen better (and cleaner) days, refusing to identify himself, and asking about outlaws with that expression playing at the corner of his mouth? Zohar might have flunked out of school but she wasn’t stupid.

“Uhh, I live in the forest, I’ll have you know. In the tavern.” She rested her hands on her hips. “I walk through it every day and I’ve never met one outlaw. Crawling with outlaws my ass.”

Leaving Tempest to rip up dandelions, she moved back over towards Hero and leant against the fence, resting her chin in one hand.

“Honestly, though, I don’t think they’re that dangerous.” She added in a more serious tone. “I think if you leave them alone they’ll leave you alone. Besides,” she shrugged, “I don’t have anything to steal.”

From behind her, Tempest snorted loudly.

“Except Tempest,” Zohar amended, smirking, “and I’d like to see anyone try and steal him.”
