Watch and Wager does confirm. Good catch, Craig.
Read "Ballet with Bullets", by the way, it is a good tome. The ratings system is far more specific than any I have deployed in the past. I would have to concur with your posit that it is superior to algorithmic or logistic regression based techniques when it is coupled with observational handicapping. Sensei does seem to employ his observations to modify the system, in his example handicapping at the back of the book, to good effect.
PS Sensei misapplies Ainslie's "pig in a poke" comment as it pertains to place and show betting. He states that it has to do with not knowing the odds in the place and show pool which you can know unless you can't see a money board. Ainslie was using the term to refer to the results of the race being unknown until the race was over which then determines your payout rate. I have Ainslie's book in my bookshelf and have a book mark stuck right in the chapter that Sensei alludes to. It sits right next to a work by a certain Dr. Ziemba who also has things to say about place and show betting but I won't let the "cat out of the bag" on that one, shall we say. Replies:
