Northern Shrike

The grosbeaks around our place appear to have found Al Sinclair's feeders because they've left our environs. However, yesterday on a walk east of Washago we watched a Northern Shrike do battle with a shrew. The shrew eventually lost, but not without putting up a valiant fight, even to the point of wrenching itself free of the bird's grip as it tried to fly away with its prey. The shrike pounced back on the shrew in the middle of the road, and after a few more jabs of the beak, was able to make sure he'd completed his food prep, and flew off into the woods with it.
