I believe these sophisticated observers make it all too complex. Since WWII the U S has taken on the burden of keeping the free world intact while containing communism. With the advent of Globalism our responsibility came to include the communist states as well as the middle east. This is reflected in our trade agreements and defense arrangements. This despite the fact that the middle class in EU and Japan was better off economically than the middle class in the US. Trump has trrned it around so that the US looks after its citizens first. I thin it is overdue.
