25th Huntsville Christmas Bird Count: 18 December

*This report was originally posted by Ron Tozer on ONTBIRDS (Dec. 21, 2018) and is provided here with the kind permission of the Ontario Field Ornithologists.

It was a good day for observing: cloudy until mid-morning and then clear; calm most of day, and temperatures from minus 10 to minus 7 C. Lakes were mostly ice-covered but Mary Lake had extensive open water, and the river was entirely ice-free. However, it was a very quiet count for birds! Preliminary results follow:

Total Observers: 28. Total Species: 32 (second lowest total ever; average is 39). Total Individuals: 2,775 (average is 3,032).

New Species for the Count: Surf Scoter (1 long-staying above dam at Port Sydney). Cumulative Species Total: 93

New Highest Count: Wild Turkey (124)

Unusual Species: Red-necked Grebe (count week)

Finches: Pine Grosbeak (63), Red Crossbill (6), Common Redpoll (69), American Goldfinch (21) and Evening Grosbeak (13).

Thanks to all the participants.

Ron Tozer, Huntsville CBC Compiler, Dwight, ON
